Words from the architect

A small cafe, dressing rooms, technical and maintenance spaces of Tapionkentta sports field were to be located in the new building. The site is demanding as it is in the central area of Tapiola Garden city, between the cultural centre, Tapiola school and the orthodox church. Special demands were set for urban solution and cityscape.

We considered the building to be more like a bent street furniture than ordinary building. Firstly we wanted to keep the building as low as possible to enable long views between the church and cultural square. The adjacent park is connected to the building by integrated spectators stands. New light traffic connections were designed to border the building, the other one going over the roof. We aimed to create new physical and visual connections and new clarifying urban borders.

The building is made of concrete, the facades of graphic concrete. The windows are covered with silk screen printed protective glass sheets that repeat the pattern used for graphic concrete. Our aim was to make a durable facade that "you can kick a football to". Other important factor was surrounding city of Tapiola that traditionally consists of light colored concrete or ceramic facades. The roof is important facade of this building, we used colored "safety surface" for the roof, the material is mostly used for playing grounds.

A small cafe is located in the end of the building, having views to the sport fields and creating a tiny landmark for the building. Dressing rooms are entered via spacious integrated canopies giving the required shelter in Finnish climat. Technical spaces were partly inserted into the adjacent park slope and under the spectator stand to minimize the volyme.
