Words from the architect

The client wanted a house with a loft style configuration that utilized the advantages of living on the water.

From the edge of the river the Fennell residence evokes the ebbs and flows of the water upon which it floats.

Because the Fennel Residence is sited "on" the river as opposed to "by" the river, the relationship between the building and its site created interesting possibilities. The forms of the building; although being primarily functional are also informed by the ripples and waves on the rivers surface. The fluid forms of the building help create a stronger connection it to its watery site. The Fennell Residence was also designed to provide maximum connection to the water for the occupants, subsequently the river can be seen clearly, unobstructed from all the major living spaces.

The client desired a copper roof because of the way it ages and its potential to help the building blend into its surrounds. The shingles of the exterior were utilized because of their ability to take on the tight radiuses that were created by the external forms of the house. The interior utilizes Brazilian Cherry floors and Douglas fir decking on walls and ceilings because of the warmth and richness they bring to the structure.

The living room is adorned with almost unobstructed views to the river.

The Residence utilizes a loft style arrangement with the master bedroom and bathroom located over the main living spaces. The undulating roof allows for unhindered views to the river from all the major living areas, while unifying the individual spaces in a single volume.
