X-TERN Architects + Urban Planners, based in Merano, Italy, was founded in 2001 by Salvo Di Silvestro, Marco de Fonzo and Giorgio Gottardi in order to research the fields of architecture, urban planning, graphic design, web design and visual communication with the aim of "promoting" the key-role of the architect in contemporary society.The "flesh" of architecture -- the materials, is another field being investigated by X-TERN. The firm also believes in the exploitation of the potentials of new digital technologies and their applications. Salvo Di Silvestro and Marco de Fonzo are the associated architects of the firm since October 2005.
Born in Catania, Italy, in 1969, Salvo Di Silvestro graduated "cum laude" from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Florence, Italy. Before practicing independently, he worked in London, Rotterdam and Merano.
In 2000 he won (with W. Pardatscher and M. Klammer) the first prize at the international competition for the new Corporate Design of the "Strassendienst/Servizio Strade" (Roads Maintenance Service) of South Tyrol (Italy).
Born in Merano, Italy, in 1969, Marco de Fonzo studied at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Florence, Italy. During his studies he also worked for Pardatscher & Valtingojer, Merano (Italy) and later for Danilo Silvestrin in Munich (Germany).
He then moved to Rotterdam to work initially with Atelier Kingma & van Mameren and later with Kwau (Wim Kloosterboer). He has been teaching at the ADB (Accademia di Design) in Bolzano (Italy).
