Philosophy

Roger Sherman Architecture (RSA) specializes in the design of single and multi-family residential projects. Its work is attuned to lifestyle as a source of design ideas, as well as how to design and plan residential interiors and exteriors to maximize flexibility and accommodate change. This translates to an effort to consider and integrate the landscape and interior as equal components of the domestic realm. But also, in a period of escalating construction and land cost, it has also become quite strategic in terms of how to affordably achieve a strong architectural character in each project. This involves looking for ways to do more with less-such as trying not to build more square footage than is actually necessary, in order to attain a high quality of space, finish, and craftsmanship.

Accordingly, its office is familiar with many of L.A.'s finest residential contractors, craftsmen, engineers and consultants, and keeps itself and its clients up-to-date with the latest sustainable materials and equipment, crafts and techniques, and ecologically-friendly building technologies.

RSA's design work has been the recipient of numerous design awards, and the subject of several exhibitions and publications nationally and internationally. The most recent of these include an exhibition of the Flex-Spec-Deck House in Gloucestershire, UK, at both the Victoria and Albert Museum and RIBA Gallery in London, in July of 2005. It also won an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Merit Award the same year for the 3-in-1 House in Santa Monica, which was featured in the July 2005 issue of Los Angeles Magazine.

The firm limits overhead expenses so that its staff may optimize their time and attention with regard to the design of the projects themselves, at every level of detail, affording a unique degree of attention to the client and their programmatic needs.
