Giovanni D'Ambrosio was born in Rome on 5 July 1959. He has an artistic background, having studied advertising graphics and architecture in Rome; where his professional studio is today situated.

He has lectured on his work at Rome, Florence and Venice's universities. He has taught industrial design at Quasar institute, at the Academy of Arts in Rome and at IMBAR, The National Institute of Bioarchitecture.

The architectural experience, obtained in Italy by working on design objects and houses, was fully-developed during a five-year period in Indonesia, where he realized several private building projects such as restaurants, an art gallery and villas, learning more and more about the primitive nature and sensuality. In Bali he realized: Maccaroni restaurant (which was rebuilt after the terrorist attack in 2002), Nero restaurant and Pantarei restaurant; private houses for Roziadi and Bournias' families; Biasa Art Space, an art gallery; Kayu Kayu Gallery; Sunrise School, a kindergarden (he received a nomination at Aga Khan Awards, 2004 for this project).

He has been working with Ray Group, a society of development, on several Projects throughout Australia since 2004. Among these projects: refurbishment of Sheraton Mirage Gold Coast and of Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas (Queensland). In Mount Hotham (Victoria), Bale resort, a New Residential Building made of 48 five-star apartments, is in progress, together with the realization of new villas in Dinner Plain village (www.newhotham.com.au). Moreover, he has designed two restaurants, White Room and Roughies'.

Chronological background

• Previously, he worked in the architectural studios of: Luigi Pellegrin, dealing with architectural industrialisation and participated in the drafting for the second Roman University competition; and at the Piero Sartogo Associates studio, working on numerous projects for international trade fair pavilions/exhibitions and various boutiques throughout the world, including the Bulgari shops.
• He started his activity as industrial designer showing at the 1995 International Furniture Exhibition (Salone Internazionale del Mobile) in Milan. In the same year he was spotted on the map of the Young Italian Designers, published on the magazine Abitare (No. 344).
• As an industrial designer, he has worked on design projects with the following industries: Pozzi, Arteluce, Montina, Murano Due, ALT Murano, Cive Vetrerie, Emu, RSVP, Bieffe Plast, Upper and Progetti Shop. He is a member of ADI - The Italian Association for Industrial Design, and from 1994 he was made member of the Italian Superior Council of the National Institute of Architecture: IN/ARCH.
• Some of his projects were selected for the 1997 and 1999 edition of the International Design Yearbook coordinated by Philippe Starck and Jasper Morrison respectively. In 2001 one of his lamps, Biosfera, was chosen for the 100 Italian Design objects on tour at the Furniture Exhibition 2001 in Milan.
• He wrote two biographies for the series Universale di Architettura: one on Ettore Sottsass jr., Nomade Shiva Pop (1997), and another on Joe Colombo, Design Antropologico (Anthropologic Design, 2004). Moreover, he was responsible for the research and graphical part of the book about Luigi Pellegrin, Il mestiere di architetto (The job of an architect, 2002) for the publisher company Prospettive.

Awards

• He won the first prize for the ENIT Italian Pavilion, the national tourism agency, in 1989. He obtained an honourable mention with his NORDICA exhibition in Munich -- Germany, in the 1991 IN/ARCH prizes, and with his contribution to the Grado Zero di Architettura in Modena 1998. Moreover, he won the first prize for the project Tre parcheggi di scambio, Monti Tiburtini (Three Parking-lots in Exchange - Monti Tiburtini )in 2001. In 2000 he was invited - together with other young Italian architects - to participate at the Experimentation of the New -- Biennale di Venezia. He was a winning entry in the international competition OPUS Design Award 2001 -- Japan.
