Philosophy

Chris Kilbridge is an architect and the principal of CKA//Chris Kilbridge Architect, which he founded in 2005. Prior to this he was a partner in the architecture firm Artifact Design+Construction, based in New York City. He has worked on a wide variety of project types-including commercial, educational, residential, institutional and pro bono commissions-and collaborated with clients who's needs have ranged in scale from furniture design to regional facilities planning. Among his current work is a collaboration on the development and production of transportable, off-the-grid classroom buildings.

Chris's work has been recognized for its design excellence by award and competition juries-such as the Boston Society of Architects, Friends of The Highline, the Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine and Transportation Alternatives-and has been published internationally in magazines and books, including Architecture Magazine, Dwell, Materials for Design (Princeton Architectural Press), XS: Big Ideas, Small Buildings (Thames & Hudson) and House Plus (Thames & Hudson).

Since 2001, he has combined his architecture practice with teaching. In addition to a full-time position at the University of New Mexico in 2006-2007, he has taught graduate design studios at Syracuse University, the University of Oregon and lectured at Columbia University, the University of Oregon and the Pratt Institute. Chris has contributed his time pro bono for such not-for-profit organizations as Friends of the India Street Pier, New York New Visions, and Transportation Alternatives.

He received his Masters of Architecture From Columbia University and a BA from Vassar College. In 1986 he was awarded a Montgomery Research Fellowship to conduct fieldwork in the Middle East.

Chris is a licensed architect in New York State and is NCARB certified.
