Barton Myers
Barton Myers Associates approaches design on two basic levels; first by addressing, on a fundamental philosophical level, "what to do", and second, by investigating appropriate design decisions regarding "how to do it".
Our search for the core principles inherent in each project is both open and innovative in spirit - as a collaborative effort, it exploits the contributions of the full range of project participants: members of the firm, consultants, and clients. Careful consideration is given to the appropriateness of design choices in terms of context, program, and construction. We are known as architects who link excellent design with a larger commitment to the built environment.
Barton Myers Associates has developed as a widely-diversified practice - from individual architectural projects to large-scale planning. Regardless of size or scale of project, we emphasize the search for fundamental principles as well as the necessary balance between the basic elements which make up architecture, including structure, systems, materials, spatial organization, and light. We strive for the reasonable balance of these elements, to achieve an appropriate, accommodating, and inventive architecture.
The Los Angeles office is organized to emphasize the active leadership of Mr. Myers on projects, a commitment that includes involvement during all phases of design. As lead design architect, Mr. Myers is assisted by other outstanding and experienced associates in key roles, fulfilling the full range of design and execution responsibilities.
In 1986, Mr. Myers was the recipient of the first Toronto Arts Award for Architecture in recognition of his contribution to the city, and in 1994, he received the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal. Most recently, Mr. Myers was awarded the 2002 American Institute of Architects/Los Angeles Chapter Gold Medal. Mr. Myers has held a continuing appointment as Professor of Architecture at UCLA's School of Architecture and Urban Design since 1980 and lectures extensively throughout North America and abroad.
